Celebrating 2 eventful decades of creating experiences

Two decades after having founded the advertising agency Maadhyam, I decided to venture into something different yet relevant. This was a time when the live experience industry was just about beginning to find its feet. And so, Showtime was born, with a first-of-its-kind 33-city laser launch of the Hero Honda Street motorcycle in 1997!

Hero Honda (now Hero MotoCorp) launched us into the events business, so at some level, Mr. Pawan Munjal is one of the founding members of our company. They gave us our first cheque of Rs. 50 Lacs to bring hi-tech laser systems into India and set us up for what has been an amazing journey over the last 20 years.

Today, Showtime can proudly claim to be the technology leaders of the event industry in India having pioneered almost every new technology in the business and hence continually raising the bar for the industry as a whole.

This has enabled us to build and sustain an enviable client portfolio of brand leaders across a diverse spectrum �" from a Tata and the Taj to an Infosys and a CII. From a BCG and an IMG to a Hero and a Star TV. From a Castrol and an SAP to a Daimler and a DLF. And what gives us an even greater sense of pride is the amazing fact that most of these relationships have endured over the past two decades, a testimony to our ability to constantly create value for them.

As Showtime celebrates an important milestone of two eventful decades of its existence this year, I would like to reiterate my belief and guiding principle that in our business, every company is only as good as the people who work for it. It is a matter of immense satisfaction that every Showtimer wears his or her passion on their sleeves because it's this passion to create and deliver the best that has keet us at the top. It would also be in the fitness of things to recognise all our partners, both national and global who have helped us to continuously set new standards for the industry.

It has also been an extremely satisfying experience for me to have played a pivotal role in creating and building an apex industry body for the Indian Event Fraternity as the Founder President of the Indian Event & Entertainment Management Association (EEMA) that has over 300 members today and is a vibrant network that has been recognised across national and international fora.

Design for me is about storytelling and transporting the audience to a land of unicorns and rainbows. Coming from a very humble background, with very few resources and fewer opportunities in a third world country like ours, I have come to believe that the work we do defines us, and nothing else.

Creativity in Events is not only about the design per say, but also about what goes into making or creating that design, how it comes to life, what materials are required, where can the materials be procured from, how much will it cost and so on. Design is in the details of an idea. Also, it is important to be able to dream big, dream something that seems impossible to the world, dare to be different, do things never been done before, because with the right research, methodologies, knowledge and determination, you can make it happen.

I started my career in client servicing in an advertising agency. My passion for design led me to switch from advertising to events and it is that same passion that has led me to where I am today. Passion will always win the day.

When we won the pitch to design, execute and manage the Hero MotoCorp Pavilion and Tata Motors Pavilion at the Delhi Auto Expo 2018 it came with the responsibility of designing and building over 8000 square meter of space in total. It is no small feat to have won these pitches and beat close to 14 top agencies in today's highly competitive multi-agency environment.

How did we do this? It is in how I make my team approach every project and have been doing so for last 13 years �" innovation at every step of brain storming and ideation, a constant hunger for knowledge, going into the minutest of details and doing exhaustive research on every aspect of the design/idea and lastly - extreme hard work.

And this is what real creativity looks like or is defined as in a successful event execution.

MINIMIZING THE GAPS

All about Event Production

- MANISH KASHYAP, COO - SHOWTIME GROUP

I was an architect before venturing into the events sector which made me strongly believe in attention to detail at every level. With 15 incredible years in the Events Industry and having handled various positions in distinctive realms of creativity and experiential marketing, I appreciate people who can provide creative, imaginative and out of the box solutions for event execution and production process.

I feel, it's crucial to bridge the gap between design and execution and find solutions to execute at a cost that the client agrees. Thus, making it mandatory for people in production to keep themselves updated about materials that can be used in events and explore materials outside the spectrum of events as well.

Apart from this, let me also highlight the 3 key interfaces for a seamless execution of event production onsite. The first interface is the designing aspect from where the production team can get an estimate. It is solely about the attempt to make the design happen and if there is any communication gap then the production team should collaborate with the creative team without hampering their designing freedom. They should believe in the design and put their best foot forward to ensure they deliver what is closest to what has been visualized and reduce the gap from commitment to delivery.

The second interface is the financial part. Events industry needs to realize and believe that they are the clients to the vendors and work with them accordingly. I would also like to add here, that vendor management is essential not only for the betterment of the industry but to reduce the gap from design to logistics as well. Business should not be given to vendors on the basis of preference of individuals but for the capabilities and skill set of vendors.

Clients form the third interface according to me. As the Operations are the ones who are seen by the clients onsite, it is important for them to present themselves to the clients at a behavioral and intellectual level, and any kind of nervousness from their end might result in a snowball effect. In this interface, it is imperative to minimize the gap between the operations and the clients for a seamless execution of an event onsite.

I imagine the future of production would largely be based on outsourcing. It can go the architecture way as well where architects are designing. There are national and international level experts in different spaces nowadays, and putting the best on the job saves time and money.

So to put things in perspective, Events is essentially creative thinking, thinking designs, thinking spaces, while staying connected to the brand. It's a mix of processes, mix of people, and it's the people who make the industry. We require the right mix of talent, people who can inspire others to achieve bigger milestones in events.

Lastly, I strongly believe in Showtime's philosophy to #Be1. Here 'Be 1' is not about supremacy, it is about creating the desire and aspiration in clients to work with us, to become the number 1 choice for all kind of events.

DON'T JUST SELL…SOLVE!

Tricks of the Trade and The Art of Client Management

I believe that as an event organisation we are not just sellers but also solution providers. With an experience of over 15 years in the event and experiential marketing industry and having handled primarily large format events, it has been by enduring desire to create the perfect formula for client management.

For starters, it is extremely essential to do our own research on not just the client and the brand we service but to also understand the team or the departments that work on the product within the organisation. It is said that to be able to give direction it is important to also have knowledge of the task at hand and to be able to perform the task oneself. Thus, it's important to be able to adapt to a client, to be able to fit into the role they expect from us. We as client servicing individuals should strive to become the 'go to person' for our clients. Needless to say, a relationship works best on faith and honesty so it becomes imperative that we at all times convey the feasibility of our ideas, the limitations and back up plans in case things go south.

Apart from this, I would also like to highlight the fact that the clients mostly like to participate in the process as their stakes are always higher, so to be able to ensure a smooth sail execution and production, the agency has to be transparent yet diligent. After all it is an exchange of value between two people. We as an agency are trying to get their brand to the forefront and give ideas that propels their brand. So it isn't just about a winning a pitch or selling an idea, it is about collaboration and partnership. It is this partnership that leads to effective client management wherein we become the top of the mind recall for our clients. And to add to that, if we hold greater knowledge and are adept with the latest trends in the market, innovations and technology, we can enhance the delight factor of any event/project.

Lastly, the most important factor and perhaps something that got me to realize my dreams in events is �" Passion. It is important to have passion or 'junoon' for what you do in life or to be able to identify what you want so that you give your 100% to it. And that is something a client can easily understand after one single interaction with the servicing partner.

So, let me leave you with this parting thought, "If you have value for what you do, then you will add value to everything you do. It's that simple". And I firmly believe that Showtime is the place where dreams come true, as they did for me and continue to do so every single day.
